Yangon , formerly Rangoon , city (1983 pop. 2,458,712), capital of Myanmar and of Yangon div., S central Myanmar, on the Yangon River (a mouth of the Ayeyarwady) near its entrance into the Gulf of Martaban. The largest city in Myanmar, Yangon is the transportation hub of the country and its commercial and industrial center.1
The highlight of any trip to Yangon is undoubtedly the magnificent Shwedagon Pagoda, surely one of the most incredible sights in the world and certainly one of the best preserved and maintained. Yangon though, is not just Shwedagon: visitors get a taste of urban Myanmar, so rare elsewhere in the country.2

In 1997 the national TB programs of Myanmar introduced DOTS in the capital city, Yangon, which has approximately 5 million inhabitants. All new case-patients in national TB program clinics are routinely treated with isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol, and pyrazinamide without drug susceptibility testing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.4
The holy golden monument, Shwe Dagon Pagoda is the most sacred site in Myanmar; stand on the hill to north part of central Yangon. According to legends, originally stupa was built for the house of eight hairs of Buddha 2500 years before.5
In April of 1994, the Chinese religious delegates visited and presented two replicas of the Sacred Tooth for religious devotion and worship in Myanmar . The Dhama Pala hillock in Mayangon Township , Yangon (just a few hundred yards from Kaba Aye Pagoda) and the Shar Taw village in Amarapura Township , Mandalay Division were chosen and two Pagodas were constructed enshrining the Tooth Relics.6
