On a related note, these fears seem fully justified: “House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) both expressed concern Monday over the response of the Burmese government to a massive cyclone that hit the country over the weekend, which has left up to 10,000 dead and tens of thousands missing. Burma is ruled by a military junta which has spurred international aid for decades.1

It’s a place where a guy and his droogs can go to ogle spread-eagled nude mannequins before a bit of the old ultraviolence. Why the dairy industry has yet to feature it in those milk ads is a mystery.2

But they neglected to calculate the cost of living in such a palace–property taxes, country-club dues that go with the lot, staff to do landscaping and cleaning–or even to factor in taxes. “If you have $1.8 million left [after the house and the income taxes] and it’s costing you $500,000 a year to live, you’re in big trouble if you’re making only $70,000 a year,” says McDonald.3

Several such high school students got an up close look at these and other geological phenomena during a recent five-day field study in Massachusetts. Their teachers, Mary Ellsworth and Teresa Huckleberry, know the importance of visual and hands-on methods in explaining science without benefit of the spoken word.4
