Wenchuan

Wenchuan (??) is a small town in Sichuan?s Aba Tibetan-Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, which straddles the confluence of the Min and Zagunao Rivers. Wenchuan county is one of only 4 counties that are the main location of China?s Qiang (?) ethnic group ?1

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter Scale rocked southwest China today, the Seismological Bureau said. The quake struck Wenchuan County, 100 kms to the northwest of Chengdu, provincial capital of Sichuan, this afternoon, the bureau said.4

Yang Xianfang, a woman of 54, was a Wenchuan County Minshan machine factory worker. She lived at Apartment 1 on the fifth floor of building 23, Nongmin Street, Yutang Township, Dujiang weir.5

The hardest hit county, Wenchuan, has 111000 people, with a large ethnic Tibetan population. Wenchuan county is also home to the Wolong Nature Reserve, China?s leading research and breeding base for endangered giant pandas.6

The SSB has send out a 180-person emergency rescue team to Wenchuan. The Chinese Air Force has sent two helicopters to assist with relief work in the quake-stricken areas.7
