Sigma Alpha Epsilon

Sigma Alpha Epsilon is the only social fraternity founded in the South before the Civil War. It is established by eight students at the University of Alabama in 1856.1

At Sigma Alpha Epsilon, campus involvement is a common sight. While achieving prominence in athletics at Willamette University, the members are also seen across campus involved in many other activities and volunteer organizations.2

With the start of the Civil War in 1861, most brothers answered the call to arms. At the end of that tragic war, only one Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter survived.3

The Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity was founded on the ninth day of March, 1856, at the University of Alabama, in the old city of Tuscaloosa. Eight students who had become hard and fast friends were the founders of this brotherly society, which was destined to extend to the furthermost limits of the country.4

Founded in a time of intense sectional feeling, Sigma Alpha Epsilon confined its growth to the southern states. By the end of 1857, the fraternity numbered seven chapters.5

Throughout the Fall 2007 semester, Florida Alpha has excelled in its Intramural competitions. The Florida Alpha Football team defeated Sigma Chi (20-6) and Sigma Phi Epsilon (7-6) in the single elimination playoff series in order to meet Pi Kappa Alpha in the Greek League Championship.6
