A pair of horses have been euthanized after crashing into different fences during the cross-country phase of the Rolex Three-Day Event. Frodo Baggins, a 13-year-old thoroughbred from New Zealand, crashed through the fifth fence with his rider, 24-year-old Laine Ashker, on Saturday.1

About 40 dogs were euthanized Tuesday after animal control officials went to the two-story home and found 52 dogs inside it, along with about 20 more in a nearby barn. Officials said there were also nine cats, three rabbits and a bird.2

After the race, the filly Eight Belles collapsed after pulling up. According to Dr. Larry Bramlage, among the on-call veterinarians Saturday at Churchill Downs, she broke both of her front ankles and was euthanized on the track.3

The cheers for the winner’s 4 3/4-length victory were cut short when Eight Belles, the runner-up, collapsed while galloping out near the second turn. She broke her two front ankles and was euthanized on the track minutes later.4

The Quiet Man was the second horse to be euthanized following a fall on this year’s Rolex course. Frodo Baggins, a 12-year-old Thoroughbred from New Zealand was euthanized after sustaining a skull fracture and serious lung injury.5

As a pet owner, if you do ever need to have your pet euthanized, you have a right to know how the vet will dispose of the remains. You also have the right to take the pet home and give it a proper burial.6
