De La Hoya Fight

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 11:03 pm

De La Hoya fights Saturday night against light-hitting Steve Forbes in what is scheduled to be the first of three fights before he calls it a well-done career by the end of the year. It's a homecoming of sorts for the fighter from East L.A., but merely an appetizer for bigger things later this year against the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr., and possibly Miguel Cotto.1

Bart Barry of CBS Sportsline (boxing) has an interesting article about the future of Golden Boy Productions. While 2008 will be a huge year for them with De La Hoya’s fight Saturday, a rematch with Mayweather in September and a retirement in December, there are questions about how the company plans to make money after their one and only superstar stops competing.2

It will be an unprecedented super fight between two boxing superstars and former Olympians, an event poised to shatter records. Golden Boy Promotions announces, The World Awaits–six-division world champion Oscar De La Hoya versus unbeaten, four-division world champion Floyd Mayweather–for the junior middleweight championship.3

Nothing against Forbes, but the only scenario in which this is a somewhat competitive bout is if De La Hoya doesn’t train properly and completely looks past this fight to his rematch with Mayweather. There is precedent for such a scenario.4

Meanwhile, the De La Hoya camp is furious that Trinidad pulled out of talks for a rematch to move up to 154 pounds to fight Reid. They have now decided that Oscar De La Hoya will try and regain a portion of the 147-pound title in his next fight, promoter Bob Arum said.5
