Cranford
Cranford is incorporated as a township by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 14, 1871, from portions of the Townships of Clark, Linden, Springfield, Union and Westfield. Portions of the township were taken to form Garwood (March 19, 1903) and Kenilworth (March 13, 1907).1

Originally, Cranford was published in eight parts in Charles Dickens’ journal, Household Words. The first installment appeared in 1851 with more following in 1852 and finishing in 1853.3
The fictional town of Cranford is closely modelled on Knutsford in Cheshire, which Mrs Gaskell knew well. The book has little in the way of plot and is more a series of episodes in the lives of Mary Smith and her friends, Miss Matty and Miss Deborah, two spinster sisters.4

These results strongly suggest that the enormity and complexity of the sperm whale’s nasal apparatus evolved in response to sexual selection via an acoustic display (Cranford 1999). Analysis of these data will yield intriguing results.6
