Cinco De Mayo Lesson Plans

Holiday: Cinco de Mayo - Students examine the history of the Cinco de Mayo holiday, its significance to Mexican people, and the battle between Mexican and French troops. They view photos of traditional Mexican costumes, make Cinco de Mayo crafts, and examine the culture.1

Your class has been called upon to be “cub” reporters to cover the May article on Cinco de Mayo. You will gather information and present your own personal understanding about the history of Cinco de Mayo.2

Only one day to prepare a Cinco de Mayo fiesta? Here are a few helpful hints to make your Cinco de Mayo fabulouso without much dinero or tiempo (time).3

This project is a way for students to explore the culture of Mexico. Students will view sites on Cinco de Mayo, which will give them background information on the history of Cinco de Mayo.4

Language Arts: Have students write a short story, poem, or essay (depending on age) about Cinco de Mayo. You could also have them wrote about the experience of learning about/celebrating Cinco de Mayo in the classroom.5

The History of Valentine’s Day:- Each year, on February 15, the Luperci priests gathered on the Palantine at the cave of Lupercal. Here, according to legend, Romulus and Remus, founders of Rome, had been nursed by a mother wolf.6

This curriculum unit is designed for upper elementary gifted students. The objective is to provide students with the background information necessary to promote environmental awareness in their community.7

BEAN and SEED MOSAIC - Students create a bean and seed mosaic focusing on Mexican culture. They develop an aesthetic value for others’ work and a cultural sensitivity.8
