The iPod touch, like the iPhone and the updated iMac, represents an official shift from Apple’s signature white plastic product designs to a new, stylish black, glass and metal configuration. Apple clearly has a knack for making already-gorgeous products even more striking and elegant.²

However, the iTouch (as some have called it) lacks the email application of the iPhone. It also doesn’t have Bluetooth, or the ability to add or edit calendar entries.³

And in the company’s latest gadget - the iPod touch - Apple has taken that metaphor and turned it into reality. For its flagship flash-based media player it has dumped the click wheel in favour of a touchscreen-drive user interface.⁴

The touch automatically displays all videos (including TV shows, music clips, and your own movies) horizontally, while it can display Safari Web pages either horizontally or vertically, depending upon how you’re holding the unit. It adjusts automatically, thanks to the onboard accelerometer.⁵

Anyway, it?s hard to think of what could be coming a decade from now, but then, who could have forseen the iPod in 1998? It?s pretty clear, though, that any format that could all but smash one of the biggest industries in history deserves its moment in the sun.⁷
